Recently, a six month project for young carers 12-18 years of age was conducted at the Macarthur Disabilities Services (MDS) offices, offering respite from the responsibilities of caring for a family member, friend or someone in their household with a disability, mental illness, medical condition or drug-related problem.

Through a variety of creative and multimedia workshops and via various outings and excursions, an opportunity was provided for carers to gain hands-on experience in media and the arts in order to tap into their feelings using these powerful expressive forms. Participants were under no pressure to create 'masterpieces' and it was precisely because of this opportunity to simply chill out, enjoy and explore that plenty of inspired moments occurred.

The project also represented the inauguration of MDS' foray into its own in-house digital media facility, with the purchase of a couple of iMacs and software, video, lighting and sound equipment in anticipation of sustained growth in this key area.

LAUNCH

In celebration of the knowledge and skills gained, personal development achieved and to showcase some of the work created by the young carers involved in this fantastic program, a CREATIVE LINKS EXHIBITION NIGHT was held on Thursday, December 1, 2011 at the Campbelltown Arts Centre.
