ARTYCÁF – A SOCIAL ENTERPRISE

The opportunity to take advantage of strategically important partnerships and locations was vital to the implementation of Council’s Cultural Plan. Such an opportunity arose with the recent addition to the Narellan Town Centre of new shops and a cinema, with the main entrance now facing the front of Narellan Library.

Funding via the Australian Government’s Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) Jobs Fund was secured to transform the unused front lower corner of the Library into an arts café and partnerships, programs and projects established to both fit out the facility and commence activities towards providing education, training, part-time employment and fostering sustainable creative industries in the local government area.

MULTIMEDIA PROJECT READY, SET, PROMOTE!

Camden Creative Studios partnership with the DEEWR-funded MTC Work Solutions employment agency extended into a fourth six-month Work for the Dole project, this time to give participants hands-on experience in preparing promotional material of all kinds in direct relation to the newly emerging ARTyCáf.

Sometimes the tasks were simple skills-in-demand-type office duties or, perhaps, a range of explorations in graphic design. At other times, though, they were somewhat more esoteric. For instance, in the pursuit of expanding their aural horizons for producing home-grown audio CD content for release and sale at the Cáf as part of a set of creative industries workshops, participants spent a solitary morning together in the Studios’ control room listening carefully to turn-of-the-century French Impressionist orchestral compositions by the likes of Maurice Ravel, Claude Debussy and Eric Satie ... a welcome alternative to their other life, repainting the Minto PCYC walls for the umpteenth time!

MULTIMEDIA PROJECT REFLECTIONS AND PROJECTIONS IN THE URBAN CIVIC SPACE

Through ArtsNSW support, three sets of educational, digital design and production workshops were conducted at the Studios over a year, with some of the outcomes being performed and/or projected at the fledgling ARTyCáf:

  • MOVING PHOTOS – Stills on a Timeline
  • WORD, VOICE AND TEXT – Singing, Sampling and Typography
  • LET'S PLAY – Lightweight Theatre and Virtual Props
